Body Sculpture Happening

For this piece, I wanted to construct something I could wear on my head that could react with my body and can also act as a display. I started by cutting mdf board into even pieces and screwed them together.

I then took the router and carving two eye sockets to see out of.

I also carved a neck hole so I can wear it.

I took apart an old seat and used the foam cushion.

I then inserted the foam around the neck hole and taped it to the mdf board using masking tape.

To help my medium stick and stay, I decided to cover almost all of my box in paper and different kinds of tape.

I designed a wood block insert that would covered the eye holes from the inside so that it would, at my control,  obstruct my view. I also used the router and carved a path in both of the wooden boxes.

I took black pastel and colored my box and layered chrome spray paint on top. I then cut and screwed two wood blocks to enclose the box once both halves were together. 

I had a lot of fun with the router. I decided to carve a pattern into only one half on the box. I then painted the inside of the pattern with an orange ink to add depth and dimension.  The other half is offset by a paper cutout that is screwed in. This paper cutout has a uniquely-shaped window cutout with a different color/ texture featured on the inside.

I painted the inside of the box all sorts of different colors using watertown ink. The neck hole was also painted and fades from green to blue on the bottom. I then installed a locking mechanism so that once I put it on, I could secure it using the lock. I then added hinges on the other side to open and close the box with ease. 

In addition to painting the neck hole, I layered duck tape on one side and masking tape on the other. Both surfaces are spray painted silver along with inside. This piece is also meant to be engaging so paper was installed which features different shapes cutout with a different color/texture featured on the inside.

Architecture relief

For this piece, I was inspired by modern and post modern architecture. The first thing I did was I cut paper and using clear tape, I taped two halves together to create this arch like shape that I took from the Sydney Oprah House.

I took two different colors of poster board and cut them and taped them together using clear tape in order to replicate the arch shape but in a tall more sinister manner.

Using push pins and clear tape, I secured each arch to the foam core display.

Using foam core, black poster board, and balsa wood, I created a modern piece of architecture  that I was inspired by.

All of the components are secured on using push pins and clear tape. String was added to each corner to add more of an aesthetic.

Momento

For the Momento piece, my memory was from the time I was 10. I had stayed the night over at a friend's beach condo. Day turned to night and we decided to play hide and go seek tag. I was up first and when I found him, we both ran for it. I chased him down a few flights of stairs and as he headed into the pool area, he opened the gate and slammed it behind him. He did not realize how close I was to him. I had a huge gash on the right side of my face and there was so much blood that my friend's dad thought my eye was gone. I started by trimming down a piece of random wood from the woodshop down to a 6 inch by 6 inch block.

I then took foam core board and cut pieces of sharp triangles. 

I then took masking tape and covered the six inch block. I took my watertown ink set and painted the tape a brown color and then as a reflection of the blood, I splattered paint on top of the piece.

                                          Step 4. Rub each piece on to the sidewalk.

                                     Step 5: Add nails and place them on a black display board.

Step 6: Add water color ink to each piece.

Statement Responses

The body is the primary mode of perceiving scale 

perception is different from when we were little. When I was little I percieved everything to be huge. The world is so much bigger than the average person perceives and when people can unit to produce something in history such as a football stadium at sellout capacity, it speaks volume to scale.

Capacity of objects to serve as traces of authentic experiences 

When an artists develops or creates something, that is a true representation of their own personal experience, they put themselves, their heart, creativity into their piece. Artists draw authentic experiences to serve as inspirations which I believe creates way more of an investment and dedication to each piece.

The souvenir reduces the public the monumental and the three dimensional into the miniature, which can be enveloped by the body

Souvenirs are meant to be small. Souvenirs contain the same structure and shape only small scale. As humans, we like to feel and hold things. Our sense of touch is that extra sense that can only be consumed using objects like souvenirs. Placing the miniature in our hands we get a sense of scale and feel which can be possibly the two most important traits when it comes to souvenirs.

Nostalgia  cannot be sustained without laws

My older brother has a fear of heights due to a graduation from high school trip to cancun. He claims that a lucky penny that had his birth year had caused the plane to correct itself and not end up crashing. from now on he carries that penny on every flight he's been on.

To have a souvenir of the exotic is to possess both a specimen and a trophy 

This reminds me of how the English kings used to treat opponents in war. Some kings placed heads on pikes as a sign of fear to the crown. In a sick way, heads on pikes were used as trophies to warn and as a way for the king to brag. Items such as a crystal skull are a specimen but on a completely different rarity. crystal skulls give off a rare gym like gaze.

The place of origin must remain unavailable in order for desire to be generated 

We don't know much about space but the more and more we find out about outpace, the bigger it becomes. This gives us a sense of knowing but also an opportunistic outlook because there is more out there even though we may not be able to physically see that far. Even the origin of our planet has caused great speculation in the past and two some, still can be controversial.
